Amboseli National Park provides the classic Hollywood image of Africa. Set in rolling savannah scenery it is dwarfed by the presence of the pink-tinged, snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro which, at 5,896 meters, is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and topped by one fifth of all the ice in Africa. Against this magnificent backdrop roam vast herds of elephant accompanied by a kaleidoscope of other fabulous beasts - lion, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, baboon, gazelle hippo and wildebeest to name but a few. There are also over 400 species of birds, all manner of reptilian, flora and fauna and some of the most soul-searing views in Africa.
Day 3: Amboseli/ Nairobi
An early morning game drive in this park known for its big five (Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino & Buffalo), which can be seen with Mt Kilimanjaro in the background is followed by breakfast and thereafter, return to Nairobi to arrive by lunchtime.
BRIEF HOTEL DESCRIPTIONS:
Amboseli Serena Lodge: Framed against the glorious backdrop of Africa’s highest mountain, the magnificently beautiful Mount Kilimanjaro, surrounded by miles of rolling grasslands, patrolled by vast herds of elephant, shaded by the lush, feathered-green of an acacia grove and hugging the banks of a gently flowing river, this very traditional yet supremely luxurious lodge is the safari destination of a lifetime. Most rooms have a great view of the Mighty Mountain – Kilimanjaro, and facilities here include a swimming pool.
Amboseli Sopa Lodge: Nestled in 190 acres of wooded Masai land, the lodge sits on the foot hills of Africa’s highest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro. Mature wooded gardens with a variety of trees and plants, from thorn trees and acacias, to fragrant frangipanis, colourful bougainvillea and giant cactus plants thrive in these surroundings. Different species of birds build their nests while monkeys with babies clinging under their bellies and squirrels dart through the gardens. Accommodation is in 83 rooms; 40 rooms with 2 queen size beds of which, 6 of them have interconnecting doors, ideal for families and 24 rooms can be turned to triples on request. The reception desk is designed like the entrance into a Masai hut, and the wall behind is painted in bold brown strokes, and decorated with silver spear heads, and Masai beaded necklaces. The lobby is open, spacious and airy. It has a high ceiling, with glass painted with colourful Masai paraphernalia sketches, and the bottom of this are beautiful green plants.
The light fixtures are long and round calabashes, cleverly put together giving a warm lighting effect in the evenings. On one side of the wall are long, thin wrought iron Masai figures. To carry on the theme, silver spear heads are hanging from the roof. Large comfortable seats complete the décor.
